English-Aramaic Dictionary

The following English words are taken from the Oxford 3000 and the definitions of Syriac words found in the Peshitta.

The entry order is as follows, if applicable:

  • Part of speech | Nuance | Syriac Word | [Biblical Citation] | Peshitta Text | English Translation​​

  • Prepositions: Separable Form | Suffix Form

    • All prepositions take singular pronominal suffixes unless otherwise noted. ​

  • Adjectives: Masculine Form | Feminine Form

    • The adverbial form adds ܝܬ unless otherwise indicated.

  • Nouns: Singular | Plural

    • Unless otherwise noted, all words ending in ܬܐ are feminine, while the rest are masculine.

  • Verbs: 3rd Person Singular Perfect | 3rd Person Singular Imperfect | Masculine Active Participle | Masculine Singular Imperative

Notation

  • Quotations indicate literal meanings.

  • The # indicates a proposed Syriac word by virtue of semantic expansion.

    • E.g. car is translated ܡܰܪܟܰܒܬܐ, though originally meaning chariot.​

  • The * indicates words used in Modern Aramaic dialects, with E. denoting Eastern Neo-Aramaic dialects​, and W. denoting Western.

    • E.g. airplane is ܛܰܝܣܬܐ in ​Assyrian Aramaic.​
