Assyrian Exile

2 Kings 17:1-6; 21-23

1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea son of Elah reigned over Israel in Samaria for nine years. 2 He did what was evil before the Lord, yet not as the kings of Israel before him. 3 Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria, and Hoshea became his servant and brought him tribute. 4 The king of Assyria found rebellion in Hoshea; he sent emissaries to So, king of Egypt, and did not offer tribute to the king of Assyria as it was each year. The king of Assyria restrained him and bound him in prison. 5 The king of Assyria went up all the land, went up to Samaria, and occupied it three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, exiled the children of Israel to Assyria, and settled them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, the villages of the Medes.

21 Because they tore the house of Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat their king. Jeroboam enticed Israel away from following the Lord and caused them to commit a great sin. 22 The Israelites persisted in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them 23 until the Lord removed them from his presence, as he had warned through all his servants the prophets. So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland into exile in Assyria, and they are still there.

א ܒܰܫܢܰܬ̣ ܬܰܪܬܰܥܷܣܪܷ̈ܐ ܫܢ̈ܝܼܢ ܠܐܚܳܙ ܡܰܠܟܳܐ ܕܰܝܗܘܼܕ݂ܳܐ ܐܡ̣ܠܷܟ݂ ܗܘܿܫܰܥ ܒܰܪ ܐܠܳܐ ܥܰܠ ܝܼܣܪܳܝܷܠ ܒܫܳܡܪܷܝܢ ܬܫܰܥ ܫܢ̈ܝܼܢ. ב ܘܰܥܒܰܕ݂ ܕܒ̣ܝܼܫ ܩܕ݂ܳܡ ܡܳܪܝܳܐ. ܒܪܰܡ ܠܳܐ ܐܝܟ݂ ܡܰܠ̈ܟܷ̇ܐ ܕܝܼܣܪܳܝܷܠ ܕܰܗܘ̤ܳܘ ܩܕ݂ܳܡܳܘܗܝ. ג ܥܠܳܘܗܝ ܣܠܷܩ ܫܰܠܡܳܢܷܥܣܰܪ ܡܰܠܟܳܐ ܕܐܬ̣ܘܿܪ ܘܰܗܘ̤ܳܐ ܠܷܗ ܗܘܿܫܰܥ ܥܰܒ̣ܕܳܐ ܘܐܝܬ̇ܝܼ ܠܷܗ ܩܘܼܪ̈ܒܳܢܷܐ. ד ܘܐܫܟܰܚ ܡܰܠܟܳܐ ܕܐܬ̣ܘܿܪ ܒܗܘܿܫܰܥ ܡܷܪܕܳܐ. ܘܫܰܕܰܪ ܐܝܼܙ̈ܓܰܕܷ̇ܐ ܠܘܳܬ̣ ܣܷܐܘܿ ܡܰܠܟܳܐ ܕܡܷܨܪܷܝܢ. ܘܠܳܐ ܐܣܷܩ ܩܘܼܪ̈ܒܳܢܷܐ ܠܡܰܠܟܳܐ ܕܐܬ̣ܘܿܪ ܐܝܟ݂ ܕܰܒ̣ܟ݂ܠ ܫܢ̣ܳܐ. ܘܰܟ݂ܠܳܝܗܝ ܡܰܠܟܳܐ ܕܐܬ̣ܘܿܪ ܘܐܣܪܷܗ ܒܒܷܝܬ̣ ܐܣܝܼܪܷ̈ܐ. ה ܘܰܣܠܷܩ ܡܰܠܟܳܐ ܕܐܬ̣ܘܿܪ ܥܰܠ ܟܠܳܗ̇ ܐܪܥܳܐ. ܘܰܣܠܷܩ ܥܰܠ ܫܳܡܪܷܝܢ ܘܰܫܪܳܐ ܥܠܷܝܗ̇ ܬܠܳܬ̣ ܫܢ̈ܝܼܢ. ו ܘܰܒ̣ܫܰܢ̱ܬܳܐ ܬܫܝܼܥܳܝܬܳܐ ܠܗܘܿܫܰܥ ܟܒܰܫ ܡܰܠܟܳܐ ܕܐܬ̣ܘܿܪ ܠܫܳܡܪܷܝܢ ܘܓܰܠܝܼ ܠܰܒ̣ܢܰܝ̈ ܝܼܣܪܳܝܷܠ ܠܐܬ̣ܘܿܪ. ܘܐܘܬܷ̇ܒ̣ ܐܢܘܿܢ ܒܰܚܠܰܝܝ ܘܰܒ̣ܚܳܒ̣ܳܪ ܢܗܰܪܓܳܘܙܳܢ ܩܘܼܪ̈ܝܳܐ ܕܡܳܕܰܝ.

Hezekiah Destroying the Brazen Serpent

2 Kings 18:1-8

1 In the third year of Hoshea son of Elah, king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz, king of Judah, reigned. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he reigned and had reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Aki daughter of Zechariah. 3 He did what was seemly in the eyes of the Lord as David his father did. 4 He removed the high places, broke the pillars, and cut down the idols. He shattered the bronze serpent Moses had made because the children of Israel strayed after it, set incense by it up to those days, and called it Nehshtan. 5 He had hoped in the Lord God of Israel; after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among those who were before him. 6 He clung to the Lord, did not turn astray from him, and kept the commandments as the Lord commanded Moses. 7 The Lord was with him. Wherever he went forth, he was victorious. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. 8 He had struck the Philistines as far as Gaza and its borders from watchtower to fortified village.

Hezekiah’s Prayer

2 Kings 19:14-19, 35-37

14 Hezekiah took the letters from the hand of the emissaries, read them, went up to the house of the Lord, and Hezekiah spread them before the Lord. 15 Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said “Mighty Lord, God of Israel, who sits on cherubim, you are God alone over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16 Incline your ear, Lord, and hear. Open, Lord, your eyes, and see. Hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he sent to revile the living God. 17 Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste to the nations and their lands. 18 They have set fire to their gods because they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands, of wood and stone, and they destroyed them. 19 Now, Lord our God, save us from his hand so all the kingdoms of the earth may know you, Lord, are God alone.”

35 It was that night the angel of the Lord went forth, killed in the camp of the Assyrian a hundred and eighty-five thousand. They arose early in the morning as they saw there all of the dead bodies. 36 Then Sennacherib king of Assyria packed up, went, returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 37 When he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, killed him by the sword. They had escaped to the land of Ararat, and Esarhaddon his son reigned after him.

Recovery of Hezekiah

2 Kings 20:1-7

1 In those days Hezekiah sickened unto death. Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘See to your household because you are dying and are not going to live.” 2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall, prayed before the Lord, and said, 3 “O Lord, remember I walked before you with truth and with a whole heart and have done what is seemly before you.” Hezekiah indeed wept greatly. 4 Isaiah had not gone out of the middle court, and the statement was upon him to say: 5 “Turn back and say to Hezekiah the leader of my people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father, “I heard your prayer and seen your tears. Behold, I heal you. On the third day, you shall go up to the house of the Lord. 6 I will add to your days fifteen years, deliver you and this village from the hands of the king of Assyria, protect this village, and redeem it for my sake and for David my servant.”’” 7 Isaiah said, “They will take a cake of figs and put it on the boil, and he is going to recover.”

Turning Back the Dial

2 Kings 20:8-11

8 Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “What is the sign that the Lord heals me and I go up on the third day to the house of the Lord?” 9 Isaiah said, “This is to you the sign from before Lord that the Lord will do the matter he said will the shadow go ten degrees or go back ten degrees?” 10 Hezekiah said, “It is lesser for the shadow to go ten degrees, is it not, rather than for a shadow to go back ten degrees?” 11 Isaiah the prophet cried to the Lord, and the shadow turned back in the dial so the sun went down in the dial of Ahaz backwards ten degrees.

King of Babylon

2 Kings 20:12-19

12 At that time Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and offerings to Hezekiah when he heard Hezekiah became sick and was alive. 13 Hezekiah rejoiced with them and showed them his treasury, silver, gold, spices, good oils, all his storehouses, and all that was found in his treasuries. Hezekiah left nothing he did not show them in his house nor in all his dominions. 14 Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and said to him, “What did these men say to you? From where did they come to you?” Hezekiah said, “They have come from a far land, from Babylon.” 15 He said, “What did they see in your house?” Hezekiah said, “They have seen all that is in my house, and I left nothing in my house I did not show them in my treasure.” 16 Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the statement of the Lord: 17 ‘Behold, the days are coming. All brought in your house and the treasure your fathers kept to this day shall go to Babylon, and nothing shall be left for you, says the Lord. 18 Some of your own sons, who went forth from you, whom you bore, shall be taken away and shall be eunuchs in the temple of the king of Babylon.’” 19 Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The Lord’s statement you said is good.” And he said, “Oh that there be peace and truth in my days.”

Manasseh

2 Chronicles 33:9-16

9 Manasseh misled Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do evil deeds like the nations the Lord destroyed before the children of Israel. 10 The Lord spoke with Manasseh and his people, and they did not accept him. 11 The Lord brought upon them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria, and they seized Manasseh alive, bound him in chains, and brought him to Babylon. 12 While he was distressed, he prayed before the Lord his God and feared greatly before the God of his fathers. 13 He prayed before the Lord, and God heard his voice, accepted his prayer, and restored him again to Jerusalem in his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew the Lord was God. 14 Afterward he built an outer wall for the town of David west of Gihon, the valley, and to the entrance at the Fishers’ Gate. He encircled the outer wall around all Jerusalem, raised it much, and set commanders of the army in all the great towns of the house of Judah. 15 He removed the foreign gods and graven images in the house of the Lord and all the high altars he had built on the mountain of the house of the Lord and in Jerusalem and threw them out of the town. 16 He built the altar to the Lord, sacrificed oblations and sacrifices of well-being and of thanksgiving, and told Judah to make the Lord the God of Israel another feast day. 17 They would not bring up sacrifices and oblations except before the Lord their God.

Finding of the Torah

2 Chronicles 34:14-21

14 When they were bringing out the money entering the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the Lord’s Torah given through Moses. 15 Hilkiah the priest answered Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the Torah in the house of the Lord.” Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, 16 and Shaphan the scribe said to the king everything Hilkiah said, answered, and said to him, “Everything you gave through your servants they are doing. 17 They are bringing out the money for investigation in the house of the Lord and giving account to overseers and the workmen.” 18 Shaphan the scribe told the king and said, “Hilkiah the priest gave it to me.” And Shaphan read it before the king. 19 When the king heard the statements of the law, he rent his clothes. 20 Then the king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the head of the king’s house, and said to them, 21 “Go pray before the Lord for me, for the people of Israel, and for Judah concerning the statements of this book that was found because much is the Lord’s anger coming upon us on account of our fathers not hearing the Lord’s statements to do all that is written in this book.”

Cleansing of Bethel

2 Kings 23:15-20

15 Regarding the altar at Bethel and the high altars made by Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin, he had uprooted this altar and high altar. He burned down the high altar, shattered it to dust, and burned down the idols. 16 Josiah turned and saw the tombs there on the mount. Then he sent and took the bones from the tombs, burned them upon the altar, and defiled it, according to the statement of the Lord the prophet of God preached, who had preached these matters. 17 The king said, “What is this monument I see?” And those of the town told him, “It is the tomb of the prophet of God who came from Judah and preached these matters you did against the altar at Bethel.” 18 And he said, “Let him be; let no man move his bones.” So they freed his bones by the bones of the prophet who came from Samaria. 19 Also Josiah had removed all the shrines of the high altars in the towns of Samaria, which kings of Israel made to enrage the Lord. He did to them as the deed he did at Bethel. 20 He sacrificed all the priests of the high altars who placed incense on the altars burned the bones of some upon them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

Josiah

2 Chronicles 35:20-25

20 After all these things when Josiah fixed the properties of the house, the lame pharaoh, king of Egypt, went up to fight at Mabug on the Euphrates and Josiah went out to meet him. 21 He sent emissaries to him and said, “What have I to do with you, king of Judah? I am not coming against you today, king of Judah, because I am not coming against you to fight. The Lord has told you to threaten me. Leave the God who is with me, lest he destroy you.” 22 Josiah did not turn his face from him, because he was going to battle and wage war. He did not listen to the statements of the lame pharaoh, and Josiah did not know him in front of the Lord and went forth to battle with him in the plain of Megiddo. 23 The lame pharaoh struck Josiah with two arrows, and the king said, “Take me away, for I am indeed struck to death.”

Judith 12:10-19, 13:1-8; 16:5-11

10 It was the fourth day, and Holofernes made a supper for his servants alone and had called none of his laborers or overseers. He said to Vagao the custodian standing over all he had: “Go please, persuade that Hebrew woman to come with you to us, eat, and dine with us. 11 Because it is a shame for us to abandon a woman like this and not speak with her, because if we do not cling to her, you will laugh at us.” 12 Then Vagao went out from before Holofernes, entered Judith’s, and said: The beautiful maid will not be restrained from coming before my lord to be praised before his face, drink with him wine, and be merry. You shall be honored today as one from among the chiefs of Assyria standing in the house of Nebuchadnezzar.” 13 Judith said to him, “Who am I to not enter beside by lord? 14 Because all seemly in his eyes I will diligently do. I shall have this glory until the day of my death.”

15 She arose and adorned herself with her garments and all her women’s adornment. Her maid entered and spread before Holofernes on the ground lamb skins which she took from Vagao to lie on so she might sit upon them and eat. Judith entered and sat down. 16 The heart of Holofernes was moved for her, for he was burning with the desire of her and his soul was buffeted because he desired much to be with her and had sought the time to know her from the day he saw her. 17 Holofernes said to her, “Drink and rejoice with us.” 18 Judith said, “I will drink, my lord, because my life is magnified upon me today, even among all the days I was in them.” 19 She took and ate before him what her maid prepared. 20 Holofernes rejoiced against her and drank much wine: he did not drink so in one day since he was born.

1 When it was evening, the servants rose to go. Vagao shut the door of the tent outside and brought out all standing before his lord, and each went to his own home tent 2 because they were very weary from the drink. 3 Judith was left alone in the tent. 4 Holofernes was cast on his bed because much wine was upon him. 5 Judith told her maid to stand outside the bedchamber to guard her going out as always because she said, “I am going to pray.” She had also told Vagao these words. All of them went from there, and no one was left in the bedchamber, great or small. 6 Judith stood at the head of Holofernes 7 and said, “Lord, Lord, God of all our forces, look this hour at the work of my hands to the height of Jerusalem because it is that time to brood over your inheritance. Do the plots of my heart for the breaking of the people who stood upon us. 8 She neared the pillar by the head of Holofernes, drew his scimitar, and neared his bed. 9 She grabbed the hair of his head and said, “Strengthen me, God of Israel, on this day.” 11 She struck him on his neck with the scimitar twice, took his head from him, roll his body from his mattress, and took his curtain from the bedposts.

5 The Assyrian came from the north mountains. He came with the chiefs of his force: so much they shut the streams and their horses covered the hills. 6 He said to destroy my borders, kill my youths by the sword, crush children on the earth, give boys to captivity, and virgins to plunder. 7 The mighty Lord oppressed them. By the hand of a female, she shamed them. 8 Because it was not by youths their mighty ones fell, nor by the sons of strong ones did he strike them, nor men high in height did they cast upon them, but Judith, the daughter of Merari, by the beauty of her face beguiled. 9 She took off the garments of her widowhood for the glory of Israel’s pains. 10 She anointed her face with perfumes, and bound her locks with a wicker, and dressed in her garments to deceive him. 11 Her sandals captured his eyes, her beauty captivated his soul, and his scimitar cut his neck.
