1 Maccabees 1:20-28
20 Antiochus returned after he struck Egypt in the hundred and forty-third year and even went up upon Israel and came to Jerusalem with a strong force. 21 He entered the sanctuary proudly and took the golden altar, the candlestick of light, all the establishment’s vessels, 22 the table the bread of the Presence, the libations, patens, sacrifice vessels, gold sacrifices, door faces, crowns, and every ornament of the temple on the temple’s surface He peeled every work, 23 took the gold, silver, and all the desired vessels, and took the hidden treasures he found. 24 Antiochus took everything, went to his land, made a great slaughter, and spoke with great pride. 25 There was great mourning in Israel in every house of their dwelling. 26 The chiefs and elders groaned along with the youths. The virgins were humbled, and their women’s beauty changed. 28 Every bridegroom had taken upon him lamentation, and the one sitting inside the bridal canopy lamented. 29 The land was moved for its inhabitants, and all the house of Jacob was dressed in shame.

Matthias
1 Maccabees 2:19-26
19 Mattathias answered in a loud voice and said: “Even if all the nations under the rule of the king obey him to leave the service of his fathers and consents to his commandments, 20 I, my sons, and my brothers, however, journey in the covenant of our fathers. 21 God forbid we forsake the Lord’s law and his commandments. 22 We do not obey the king’s word to transgress our covenant and our service or turn aside from them to the right or left.” 23 When Matthias ceased from speaking these statements, a certain Jew neared in the sight of all the people to sacrifice on the altar in Modein, according to the king’s command. 24 Mattathias saw and became zealous, and his kidneys quaked. He brought up anger according to justice, ran, and killed him on the altar. 25 He even had even killed the kind’s official who was forcing them to sacrifice and had torn down the altar. 26 Matthias was zealous in the law as Phinehas did to Zimri son of Salu.

Slaughter of the Hidden
1 Maccabees 2:29-38
29 Then many who seeking righteousness and justice went down to the land of the wilderness to live there: 30 they, their sons, their wives, and their livestock because many evils were upon them. 31 It was said to the king’s service members and forces in Jerusalem, the city of David, those who annulled the king’s command went down and were in the hidings of the wilderness. 32 Many ran upon them, overtook them, and made war with them on the Sabbath. 33 They said to them, “Enough of this! Come out and do according to the king’s command and live.” 34 They said, “We are not coming out, nor are we doing the king’s word to undo and annul the Sabbath.” 35 They rushed upon them war. 36 They did not give them a statement, nor throw a stone at them, nor shut the face of the hidings. 37 But they said, “We shall all die in our innocence. Here Heaven and earth testify for us unjustly you are destroying us.” 38 The rose against them on the Sabbath and killed them: their wives, children, and livestock, approximately a thousand persons.

Prayer and Offering for the Dead
2 Maccabees 12:39–46
39 On the next day, they came to Judah’s and told them they would take and bury those fallen bodies in their fathers’ graves. 40 Then they found under the clothes of each one of them hidden gold Jamnian idols, which the law commands Jews not to keep for themselves. It was known and believed they all had this. Because of this reason, they fell. 41 They all had blessed and confessed about the righteous judgement of God, who would bring to show clearly what is hidden. 42 They all began to pray and beg God not because of this the betraying sin would be written for them. The hero Judas was asking and supplicating all the people to guard themselves and beware of sin and was saying to them, “Here before your eyes you saw what happens to these.” 43 He imposed upon the people to give money and collect three thousand in silver. He sent it to Jerusalem to offer offerings on their behalf. He did justly and righteously because of the hope of the resurrection from among the dead. 44 For if he were not waiting and hoping for the resurrection among the dead, this would be insipid and foolish to pray and offer offerings for the sake of those dead. 45 For he was looking and expecting the wage, hope, and repose to come for those sleeping in righteousness. 46 For this, he sent to absolve the sins of those sleeping.

Onias
2 Maccabees 15:12-17
12 The narration of the vision he saw was this, seen by the priest Onias, a beautiful and virtuous man. His aspect was modest, humble in his substance, his word was sweet and suitable, and from his youth he would travel in all the righteous and beautiful by the covenant. He saw this in the vision: his hands stretched, he was praying over all the people of the Jews. 13 Still afterwards, it was seen by him a man with beautiful age and great glory, his look exceeding, greatness and fittingness upon him. 14 Onias answered and said about him, “This is the prophet Jeremiah, loving his brothers, who asks, supplicates, and prays much on the people’s and holy city’s behalf. 15 Jeremiah stretched out his right hand, gave Judas a spear of gold, and said to him, 16 “Accept this spear from God as a gift by which you will strike and destroy all your enemies.” 17 When the companions of Judas heard these words, they were encouraged by his seemly words and were well fortified. For they were able to fortify, greaten, and strengthen those who heard them and fill the souls of the youths. They themselves thought to not trust the ranks of war preparations. But with all heroism they were strengthened, and they themselves gave to the trouble in full thought on behalf of the holy city, holy temple, and every sanctuary.

Death of Judas
1 Maccabees 9:17–22
17 The strengthened the war, and some from both of them fell. 18 Also Judas had fallen, and the rest fled . 19 Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother and buried him in the grave of their fathers in Modin. 20 All Israel wept and mourned over Judah, and they lamented a great lament for him many days and said, 21 “How the mighty hero fell, the savior of Israel!” 22 The rest of the words of Judas, his wars, his victories, his heroism, and his might were not written, for they were very many.

Maccabean Martyrs
2 Maccabees 7:1–6; 30-42
1 It happened also seven brothers with their mother were arrested and were being forced by the king to eat the abominable flesh of the pig. Placed before them scourges and all devices of torture and force. 2 One of them, who was their chief, answered and said to the king thus: “What are you asking to learn from us? For we are ready to die rather than transgress the law of our fathers.” 3 When the king heard, he angered much and ordered them to heat pans and caldrons. 4 When they heated them much, for the one who was their chief, he commanded they cut off his tongue and chop the head of all his members, as his mother and brothers were standing and looking at him. 5 When they ripped all his members, the he commanded them to bring and cast him, still alive, on the pan of fire. When much smell of the burning from his body, each of his brothers were asking with their mother and saying he would die heroically: 6 “The Lord God is seeing and in truth shall console us , as Moses said in his hymn, ‘He consoles his servants.’”
30 While she was standing and begging him, the youth answered and said, “What are you expecting? I am not hearing the king’s command, but I obey the law given to our fathers through Moses. 31 But you, who have contrived and done many evils against the Hebrews, shall not escape the hands of God. 32 For we, because of these our sins, are enduring. 33 According to rebuke and discipline, the Lord our God raged over us for a little while, and again will be reconciled with his servants. 34 But you, wicked, unclean, and abhorred of all men, shall not be raised and boast in vain hope over the servants of God. 35 For you have not yet escaped the judgment of God, holder of all. 36 For my brothers of mine endured trouble a bit of the hour in life of the light, in praise of the Kingdom of God, shall be with him. But you in the just judgement of God shall receive retribution of his servants as you deserve. 37 But I, like my brothers, surrender my life and body for the sake of the law of my fathers and beg God to quickly reconcile and have pity upon our people. You in torments and in punishments will be answered. Confess God is the only one. 38 But with me and my brothers, the rage of the most high will abate to come upon all hour people justly.” 39 When the king heard these, he angered much, exceedingly, and bitterly upon his brothers and compelled him to torture. 40 Then he came out of the world purely as he completely trusted in God. 41 Finally, all of them died along with their mother.
