Jacob
Birth of Esau and Jacob
Genesis 25:21-27
21 Isaac prayed before the Lord for his wife who was barren. The Lord heard him and Rebekah, his wife, conceived. 22 Her sons pressing in the womb, she said, “If it is so, why do I live?” She went to ask the Lord, 23 and the Lord said to her, “Two people in your belly, two nations from your belly shall be divided. One nation shall be stronger than one nation. May the great be subservient to the small.” 24 The days of birth were done, and here were the twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red and all rings of hair, so he named him Esau. 26 After him his brother came out, his hand gripping Esau’s heel, so he named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. 27 Then the boys grew up: Esau became a man who knew hunting, a country man; Jacob became a blameless man and a tent dweller.

Esau's Selling of His Birthright
Genesis 25:28-34
28 Isaac loved Esau because his hunt was in his mouth; Rebekah had loved Jacob. 29 Jacob cooked a stew, and here came his brother Esau in from the field, and he was beat. 30 Esau said to Jacob, “Let me taste some of this red stuff because I am beat!” (For this he is named Edom.) 31 Jacob said to him, ‘Sell me today your birthright.” 32 Esau said in his heart, “Here I am going to die; what does a birthright matter to me?” 33 Jacob said, ‘Swear to me today.” He swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Jacob had let Esau snack on some bread and lentil stew. He ate, drank, rose up, and went. Esau disregarded the birthright.

Isaac and Abimelech
Genesis 26:6-11
6 Isaac settled in Gerar. 7 Those of the place asked him about his wife. He said, ‘She is my sister,” because he feared saying, “She is my wife.” Otherwise, the men of the region would kill him because Rebekah is beautiful in appearance. 8 During the days he spent there, King Abimelech of the Philistines looked out a window and saw Isaac fondling Rebekah his wife. 9 Abimelech called Isaac and said to him, “Look, she is your wife?! How were you saying, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I said, otherwise I would die because of her.” 10 Abimelech said to him, “What is this you did to us? One of the people nearly lay with your wife, and you would have brought us a sin.” 11 Abimelech commanded all of the people and said, “Whoever is harassing this man and his wife shall indeed be killed.”

Isaac’s Request
Genesis 27:1-4
1 When Isaac had grown old and his eyes were hard of seeing, he called his older son Isaac and said to him, “My son.” He said, “Here I am.” 2 Isaac said to him, “Here I have grown old and do not know the day I am going to die. 3 Now take your equipment, your sword and bow, 4 go out to the field, and hunt game. Make the stew as I love it and bring it to be to eat because my soul will bless you before I die.”

Rebekah's Ruse
Genesis 27:6-17
6 Rebekah had said to her son Jacob, “Here I heard your father said to your brother Esau, 7 ‘Bring me game and make me stew, and I shall eat and bless you before the Lord before my death.’ 8 Now, my son, hear my voice, the thing I am commanding you. 9 Go to the flock and get me from there two good goat kids. I shall make them into stew for your father as he loves it. 10 You shall bring it up to your father, and he will eat and bless you before the Lord before his death.” 11 Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, “Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man; I am a smooth man. 12 Will not my father feel me and I will be in his eyes a mocker? You are bringing on me curses, not blessings.” 13 His mother said to him, “Your curses be on me, my son. Only hear my voice and go get them for me.” 14 He went and took and brought it to his mother and she made a stew as his father loves it. 15 Rebekah took her older son Esau’s precious garments, which were with her within the house, and clothed her younger son Jacob. 16 She had clothed his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the skins of the goat kids 13 and gave the stew and bread she made to her son Jacob.

ܿBlessing of Jacob
Genesis 27:18-29
18 He went in to his father, and he said, “My father.” He said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Who are you, my son?” 19 Jacob said to his father, “I am your son. Your firstborn, Esau. I did as you told me. Rise, sit, and eat some of my game becase your soul will bless me.” 20 Isaac said to his son, “What is this you have quickly found, my son?” He said, “Something the Lord your God prepared before me.” 21 Isaac said to his son Jacob, “Come near, please. I will feel you, my son, if you are my son Esau or not.” 22 Jacob came near his father Isaac. Feeling him, he said, “It is the voice of Jacob, and I felt the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, because his hands were like his brother Esau’s hairy hands. 24 He said, “Are you he, my son Esau?” He said, “I am.” 25 He said to him, “Bring me to eat some of my son’s game because my soul will bless you.” He brought it to him, and he snacked. Then he brought him in wine, and he drank. 26 His father Isaac said to him, “Come near and kiss me, my son.” And he came near and kissed him. 27 He smelled the smell of his garments, blessed him, and said, “See, the smell of my son is like the smell of the field the Lord blessed. 28 God will give you from heaven’s dew, from the fatness of the earth, and much grain and wine. 29 The peoples will serve you, and the nations will bow down to you. Be the head for your brothers. The sons of your mother will bow down to you. Your cursers be accursed; your blessers, blessed.”

ܿEsau's Blessing
Genesis 27:30-40
30 When Isaac finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob left his father Isaac, here his brother Esau came in from his hunt. 31 He also made that stew and brought it to his father. He said to his father, “My father will rise and snack on his son’s game, for your soul will bless me.” 32 His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Isaac was very greatly and strongly alarmed and said, “Who perhaps is he that hunted game and brought to me. I snacked on all you came. I blessed him, and still may he be blessed.” 34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he wailed very greatly and bitterly and said to his father, “Bless me! Also me, my father!” 35 His father said to him, “Your brother entered with deceit and took away your blessings.” 36 Esau said, “Truly he is named Jacob: he has deceived me these two times and has taken my birthright. Now here he took away my blessings.” Esau said to his father, “Have you left no blessing for me?” 37 Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Look, I have made him the head of you, and also I have given him all his brothers as servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. For you then what will I do, my son?” 38 Esau said to his father, “You have one blessing, my father. Bless me! Also me, my father!” Esau raised his voice and wept. 39 Isaac his father answered and said to him, “Look may your site be by the land’s fatness, away from the dew of heaven above. 40 You shall live by your sword and serve your brother. If you repent, his yoke will pass from your neck.”

ܿFlight of Jacob
Genesis 27:41-45
41 Esau begrudged Jacob because of the blessings with which his father blessed him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of lamentation for my father are approaching, and I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 But the words of her elder son Esau were told to Rebekah. She sent and called her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Look, your brother Esau is threatening you to to kill you. 43 Now, my son, hear my voice. Get up and get yourself to my brother Laban of Haran. 44 Stay there for a few days until your brother’s fury calms 45 and until your brother’s fury passes from you, and he forgets what you did to him. Then I will send and take you from there so I am not bereft of both of you in one day.” 46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life before the Hittite daughters. ܿJacob’s Ladder
Genesis 28:10-15
10 Jacob left Beer-sheba to go to Haran. 11 He happened at a place and stayed the night there because the sun set. He took some rocks of the place, put down his pillow, and slept in that place. 12 Then he saw a dream. Here was a ladder set on earth, its top reaching Heaven. Here were God’s angels ascending and descending on it. 13 Here the Lord was standing over it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham, the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie shall I give to you and to your offspring, 14 and your offspring will be like the dust of the earth. You will multiply to the east, west, north, and south. All of the earth’s families will be blessed by you and by your offspring. 15 Look, I am with you. I shall guard you wherever you shall go and shall bring you back to this land. I shall not forsake you until I do what I said to you.” 16 Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Truly the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 Jacob feared greatly and said, “How fearful is this place today! This is no other but the house of God, and this is the gate of Heaven” 18 Jacob got up early in the morning, took the rock he placed as his pillow, made a monument, and poured oil upon its head. 19 He named that place Bethel, although Luz had been the name of that place at first. 20 Then Jacob vowed and said, “If God is with me, guards me in this way I go, and gives me bread to eat and clothes to wear, 21 and I return in peace to my father’s house, the Lord shall be my God. 22 This rock I made a monument shall be God’s house, and I will surely give you one tenth of all you give to me.”

ܿJacob’s Meeting Rachel
Genesis 29:1-11
1 Jacob raised up his feet and went to the land of the sons of the east. 2 He saw here was a well in the field. There three flocks of sheep crouched over it because from that well the flocks would drink. A great rock was on the well’s mouth. 3 All the flocks were gathered there. They would roll the rock from the well’s mouth, give drink to the sheep, and return the rock to the well’s mouth to its place. 4 Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where are you from?” They said to him, “We are from Haran.” 5 He said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” They said to him, “We know.” 6 He said to them, “Is he well?” They said to him, “Well. Look, Rachel his daughter is coming with sheep.” 7 Jacob said to them, “Here the day still stands; it is not the time to gather livestock. Give drink to the sheep, and go and tend.” 8 They said, “We cannot until all of the flocks are gathered, they roll the rock from the well’s mouth, and we give drink to the sheep.” 9 While he was speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep because she was tending them. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, Jacob neared, rolled the rock from the mouth of the well, and gave drink to the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother. 11 Jacob kissed Rachel, raised up his voice, and wept.

ܿJacob’s Proposal
Genesis 29:12:20
12 Jacob told Rachel he was a brother to her father and Rebekah’s son, and she ran and told her father. 13 When Laban heard the rumor of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet him, embraced him, kissed him, and brought him to his house. Then Jacob narrated to Laban all of these words. 14 Laban said to him, “Truly you are my bone and my flesh!” He stayed in his home for a month of days. 15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Truly you are my brother, will you serve me for free? Tell me what your wages are?” 16 Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah’s eyes were soft; Rachel was beautiful in appearance, a lovely aspect. 18 Jacob loved Rachel and said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.” 19 Laban said to him, “It is better I give her to you than to another. Stay with me.” 20 Jacob labored seven years for Rachel. In his eyes, they were a few days because he loved her.

ܿMarriage of Jacob
Genesis 29:21-30
21 Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife because the days are finished, and I will come to her.” 22 Laban gathered all the region’s people and made a feast. 23 When it was evening, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and he came on her. 24 Laban gave his daughter Leah his maid Zilpah as a maid. 25 When it was morning, he saw it was Leah said to Laban, “What is this you did to me? Look, for Rachel I have labored with you. Why did you deceive me?” 26 Laban said to Jacob, “It is not done so in our region to give the young before the old. 27 Complete the wedding feast of this one, and I will give you that one also for labor: labor with me again another seven years.” 28 Jacob did this and fulfilled her wedding feast, and Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife. 29 Laban gave his daughter Rachel his maid Bilah as a maid. 30 Jacob both came on Rachel and loved Rachel more than Leah. He labored with him again another seven years.
