Persian Era
Cyrus
Chronicles 36:22-23
22 In the first year of Cyrus the Persian king, so the word of the Lord by the mouth of the prophet Jeremiah might be accomplished, the Lord spurred the spirit of Cyrus the Persian king, and the voice crossed throughout all his kingdom. Also, in writing his name was said: 23 “Thus says Cyrus the Persian king, ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has commanded me to build him a house at Jerusalem in Judah. Whoever among you of all the people whom the Lord his God wants to come up shall come to me.’”

Marriage of Esther
Esther 2:1-10
1 After these words, when the anger of King Ahasuerus calmed, he remembered Vashti and everything she did and everything decreed against her. 2 The king’s youths and attendants said to him, “They will seek for the king girls, beautiful in their appearance. 3 The king will command all the cities. They will gather all the virgins, beautiful in their appearance, to the women’s house to Hegai, the custodian guarding the women, and he will give their adornment. 4 And may the girl pleasing before the king reign instead of Vashti.” This word was pleasing in the eyes of the king, and he did so. 5 There was a Judean man in the Susa citadel, and his name was Mordecai son of Jair son of Shimei son of Kish, from the tribe of Benjamin, 6 exiled from Jerusalem with the diaspora exiled with King Jeconiah, whom King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon exiled.

7 He was raising Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle’s daughter, because she did not have a father or mother. The girl was beautiful in her appearance and beautiful in her countenance. When her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter. 8 When the king’s statement and his edict were heard, and when many virgins were gathered at the Susa citadel by the custodian Hegai, Esther also was led into the king’s house to the women’s guard. 9 The girl pleased his eyes and brought favor before him, and he rushed to give her concerning her adornment and her portions, and to give her seven righteous maids from the king’s house, and distinguished her and her maids better among the women. 10 Esther did not show her name or her tribe, because Mordecai had commanded her not to tell.

Conspiracy against the King
Esther 2:19-23
19 When the virgins were gathering together a second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate. 20 Esther had not revealed her tribe or her people, as Mordecai commanded her; Esther would do Mordecai’s command as she was faithfully with him. 21 In those days, Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate, Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king’s custodians guarding the door, enraged and sought to extend hands at King Ahasuerus. 22 The word was revealed to Mordecai, and he revealed it to Queen Esther, and Esther told the king in the name of Mordecai. 23 The word was investigated and found, and both of them were hanged on crosses. This matter was written in the book of the days of the kings.

Haman’s Plot
Esther 3:1-7
1 After these words, King Ahasuerus promoted Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and raised his seat above all the chiefs with him. 2 All the king’s servants at the king’s gate would kneel and bow to Haman because the king so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai would not kneel and bow. 3 The king’s servants at the king’s gate said to Mordecai, “Why do you transgress the king’s command?” 4 When they were saying it everyday and he would not hear them, they told Haman to know if Mordecai’s words were firm because he told them he was a Jew. 5 Haman saw Mordecai would not kneel or bow to him, Haman was filled with rage about Mordecai. 6 It was little work to stretch his hand over Mordecai alone because they showed him Mordecai’s people, and Haman sought to destroy all the Jews in the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, along with Mordecai. 7 In the first month, which is Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast lots, that is, the lots before Haman for the day and for the month were on the twelfth month, which is Adar.

Fainting of Esther
2 Esther 6:6-15
6 When she entered all the rooms, door after door, she stood before the king, sitting upon his royal throne and covered in royal clothes, shining with gold and precious stones, his appearance dreadful. 7 He lifted his eyes and with kindling showed the rage of his heart. The queen fell upon her face, her color changed, and she propped her troubled head on the maid. 8 God returned the spirit of the king into calm, and he rose from his throne hastily and with quaking. He propped her in his arms until she revived. He was encouraging her as he said, “What is it with you, Esther? I am your brother. Do not fear. You will not perish, because not upon you but upon all the others went you this judgement decree. 9 Then come near and touch the staff.” When he saw her silent, he took the staff of gold and placed it on her neck. 10 He kissed her and said, “Why do you not speak with me?” 11 She answered and said, “I saw you, my lord, as an angel of God. My heart quaked from the fright of your splendor. 12 For you are very wonderful, my lord, and your face is full of glory. 13 Speaking, she fell from the top and nearly died. 14 The king was troubled and all his ministers encouraged her.

Death of Haman
Esther 7:1-10
1 The king and Haman entered the feast made by Queen Esther. 2 The king said to Esthers still on that day of the wine feast, “What is your question and request, Queen Esther? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be done.” 3 Then Esther answered and said, “If I have found mercy in your eyes, king, and if it is seemly for the king, my life will be given with my question and my people with the request. 4 Because I and my people were sold to death, ruin, and destruction. If we had been bought as servants and sold as maids, I would have been silent. For no enemy undoes to harass the king.” 5 King Ahasuerus answered and said to Queen Esther, “Who is he, or where is he, who has raised heart to do so?” 6 Esther said, “An oppressive man and enemy, it is this evil Haman!” Then Haman was troubled before the king and the queen.
7 The king had risen in his anger from the wine feast to go out to the garden cottage. Haman had stood to beg for his life from Queen Esther because he saw ill was determined for him from the king. 8 The king had returned from the garden cottage to the banquet hall, and Haman had thrown himself on the couch where Esther was sitting. The king said, “Is he even to abuse the queen with me in the house?” The word came out of the mouth of the king, and Haman’s face was covered.
9 Harbona, one of the king’s custodians, answered and said before the king, “Look, Haman had even erected the wood upon which to hang Mordecai, who said well about the king. It is standing in the Haman’s house fifty cubits high.” The king said, “Hang him on it.” 10 And they hanged Haman on the wood he erected for Mordecai, and the anger of the king calmed.

Jews’ Self-Defense
Esther 8:3-13
3 Esther again spoke before the king and fell at his feet, begging and supplicating him to transgress the evil of Haman the Agagite and the plot he thought against the Jews. 4 The king extended the golden scepter to Esther, and it neared Esther. 5 She stood before the king and said, “If it is seemly about the king and the statement pleasing before the king, if I found mercy in his eyes, we shall write and overturn the letters and plots Haman the Agagite, who wrote to destroy all the Jews in all the king’s cities. 6 For how do I manage to see the evil that will happen to my people? How can I see the destruction of my tribe?” 7 King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to the Jew Mordecai, “See, I have given you and him the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the wood for stretching his hands on the Jews. 8 May you all seal with the king’s signet on the scroll about the Jews as it is seemly in your eyes in the name of the king so what is written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s ring does not overturn.” 9 The king’s scribes were called at that time, in the third month, which is Sivan, on the twenty-third day of the month. They wrote everything Mordecai wrote about the Jews to the forces’ generals, the dominions, and the nobles of the cities from India to Ethiopia, one hundred and twenty-seven cities: to each city in its own script, to each people in its own language, and to the Jews in their script and in their language. 10 It was written in King Ahasuerus’ name and sealed with the king’s ring. He sent letters by runners and couriers riding steeds of the herds. 11 The letters the king wrote are about the Jews in all cities to gather together, to stand for themselves, to destroy, to kill, and to destroy anyone oppressing them, with the youths, women, and their property as spoil 12 on one day in all the cities of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is Adar. 13 A copy of the text was given to every city and commanded to all the people so the Jews would be ready on that day to be avenged from their enemies.

Rebuilding the Temple
Ezra 6:13-18
13 Then, Tattenai, the authority beyond the river, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates had quickly done for what he sent according to the law. 14 The captives of Judah were doing and accomplishing the prophecy of the prophet Haggai and Zechariah, the son of Iddo. They built and completed by the law of the God of Israel, by the law of Cyrus and Darius, and by the law of Artaxerxes king of Persia. 15 This house was finished on the third day of the month of Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. 16 The children of Israel, priests, Levites, and the rest of children of Judah made a festival to this house of God’s house with joy. 17 They brought to the festival of the house of God one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, and four hundred lambs. Regarding kid goats to forgive the sins of the children of Israel, there were twelve according to the number of the tribes of Israel. 18 They set the priests in their ministry and the Levites in their ministry for the service of the house of God in Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses.

Foreign Wives
Ezra 10:1-5
1 While Ezra prayed and confessed, throwing and weeping before the house of God, a very great assembly of men and children gathered by him out of Israel because the children were weeping very much. 2 Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra the scribe: “We have been unfaithful with our God and settled foreign women from the peoples of the land. Yet there is still hope for Israel because of this. 3 Hereafter, we shall say oaths before our God to bring out all these foreign wives and those born from them, according to the counsel of the Lord and of those who fear the law of our God. From his commandment do it and be firm 4 because this portion was decreed for you because we are with you. Be strong and do it.” 5 Ezra the scribe arose and made the elders of the priests, Levites, and all Israel swear to do it according to this commandment. And they swore.

Haggai
Haggai 1:1-6; 2:10-19
1 In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the statement of the Lord was by the prophet Haggai about Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, chief of Judah, and about Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, to say: 2 “Thus says the mighty Lord: These people say the time has not arrived for the Lord’s house to be built.” 3 The statement of the Lord was by the prophet Haggai to say: 4 “Is it time for you all to live in your roofed houses, and this house is destroyed? 5 Henceforth so says the mighty Lord: Place in your hearts about your ways. 6 You sow much and gather little. You eat and are not satisfied. You drink and are not satiated. You dress and are not warm. The one among you trading earns wages to a pierced purse.
11 “Thus says the mighty Lord: Ask the priests for a law. 12 If a man carries holy meat in the fold of his mantle and touches with his fold bread, stew, wine, oil, or any food, can it become holy?” The priests answered saying, “No.” 13 Haggai said, “If one who is unclean in himself touches all these, is it not defiled?” The priests answered and said, “It is defiled.” 14 Haggai answered and said, “‘So is it with this people and with this tribe before me,’ says the Lord. ‘So is every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is defiling. 15 Henceforth consider in your heart from this day forward before a stone was placed on stone in the Lord’s temple. 16 When you were entering, upon the heap of twenty were ten. When you were entering, upon the wine vat of fifty were twenty. 17 I struck you with heat, mildew, and hail at all the work of your hands, and you did not return to me,’ says the Lord. 18 ‘Henceforth subjugate your hearts from this day forward from the forth twenty-forth day on the ninth month from the day the foundation of the mighty Lord’s temple was built. 19 Consider in your hearts: Is there no seed in the barn? Do the vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive trees not bear? From this day on I bless them,’ says the Lord.

Vision of Joshua
Zechariah 3:1-10
1 He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right to accuse him. 2 The angel of the Lord said to Satan, “Satan, the Lord will rebuke you. The Lord who chose Jerusalem will rebuke you! He is a brand plucked from the fire?” 3 Joshua was dressed with filthy garments as he stood before the angel of the Lord. 4 The angel answered and said to those standing before him, “Take away his filthy garments.” He said to him, “See, I have taken away your iniquity from you, and I shall clothe you with good garments.” 5 He said, “They will put a clean turban on his head.” They dressed him in good clothes, the angel of the Lord rising.

6 The angel of the Lord testified to Joshua and said, 7 “Thus says the mighty Lord: If you walk in my way and keep my commandments, you shall judge my house and keep my courts. I shall give you the right of walking among those standing. 8 Hear, Joshua, high priest, you and your companions standing before you, because you are men of a marvel: I here am bringing my servant to life. 9 Because here is the stone I gave before Joshua, on a single stone with seven sparkles, here I open its doors, says the mighty Lord. I shall grope the iniquity of this land on that day. 10 On that day, says the mighty Lord, you shall call each other to come under your vine and fig tree.”

Vision of Lampstand
Zechariah 4:4-14
4 I answered and said to the angel who spoke with me, “What are these, my lord?” 5 The angel who spoke with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” I said, “I do not know, my lord.” 6 He said to me, “This is the statement of the Lord about Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the mighty Lord. 7 What are you, great mountain, but like a plain. He will bring out the top stone of equality and mercies.” 8 The statement of the Lord was upon me to say, 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel have placed the foundation of this house, and his hands complete it. You will know the mighty Lord has sent me to you 10 because whoever despises the little days shall both look and see the stone of division in the hands of Zerubbabel. These seven are the eyes of the Lord, looking through the whole earth.” 11 I answered and said to him, “What are these two olive trees on the right of the bowl and its left?” 12 I answered a second time and said to him, “And what are these two olive branches between two gold nozzles from which pour gold?” 13 He said to me, “Do you know what these are?” I said, “No, my lord.” 14 He said to me, “These are the two anointed sons standing before the Lord of the whole earth.”

Nehemiah
Nehemiah 2:1-6
1 I was the cupbearer to the king. Then in the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, I would give wine before the king. I brought wine, gave it to the king, and was not ill before him. 2 The king said to me, “Why is your face ill. You have not been sick. This is nothing but illness of the heart.” I was very much afraid. 3 I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not be ill? The face of the city of the house of my fathers’ kingdom is ruined, and its gates ignited by fire.” 4 The king said to me, “Why don’t you seek and pray before the Lord of heaven?” 5 I said to the king, “If it is good about the king, and if your servant is seemly before you, send me to Judah, the city of my fathers’ graves, and I shall build it.” 6 The king said to me, “Fool. Until when are you going and coming?” It was pleasing before the king, and he sent and gave me a time.

Rebuilding the Wall
Nehemiah 4:1-6
1 When Sanballat heard we were building the wall, he was sick with much rage, and he mocked the Jews. 2 He said to his brothers and the army of the Samarians, “What are the Jews doing and boasting? Let them sacrifice and eat on the day they have set these stones from a dung heap of dust and burn them.” 3 Tobiah the Ammonite was standing by him and said, “As much as they seek, I know a fox going up it is going to uproot the stones of the wall.” 4 Hear, God, because we were ridicule. Turn their insult on their head, and give them as plunder in a land of captivity. 5 Do not clothe their guilt. Do not cover their sins before you, because his rage against the building we build. 6 We had build the wall, and he built it. The wall was finished up to its half. Then the mouth of all the people was open to work.
