Open Tomb

Matthew 28:2-4; Luke 24:3; Mark 16:5; Matthew 28:5-6

2 Behold, there was a great earthquake, for the Lord’s angel descended from Heaven, neared to roll the stone from the door, and was sitting on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 From fear of him, those guarding were disturbed and were like the dead.

Women at the Tomb

Luke 24:4-7; Matthew 28:7; Luke 24:8; Matthew 28:8; Mark 16:8

4 And while they were amazed at this, here two men had stood above them, their clothes glittering. 5 They were in fear and bowed their face down to the earth. They said to them, “Why do you seek the living with the dead? 6 He is not here. He rose. Remember what he told you while he was in Galilee. 7 He said, ‘The Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day rise.’

Mary Magdalene at the Tomb

John 20:2-17; Mark 16:9

2 Mary ran, came to Simon the Rock and that other disciple Jesus had loved, and said to them, “They took our Lord from the sepulchre, and I do not know where they have put him.” 3 Simon went out along with that other disciple, and they were coming to the sepulchre. 4 The two were running together, but that disciple outran Simon and came first to the tomb. 5 He looked forth, saw the linens laid, but did not indeed go in. 6 Simon came after him, entered the sepulcher, and saw the linens laid. 7 The sudarium that was bound on his head was not with the linens but was wrapped and placed aside in a certain place. 8 Then that disciple that came first to the sepulchre entered, saw, and believed. 9 For they did not yet know from the scriptures he was to rise from the dead. 10 Those two disciples again went to their place. 11 But Mary stayed at the tomb weeping, and while weeping, she looked into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels sitting in white: one of them at his pillow, and the other at his feet where the body of Jesus was placed. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why do you weep?” She said to them, “They have taken my Lord, and I know not where they have put him.” 14 She had said that, turned behind her, saw Jesus standing, and did not know it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek?” She supposed him to be the gardener and said, “My lord, if you have taken him, tell me where you have placed him so I may take him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbuli,” which is to say, “Teacher.” 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not approach me, for I have not ascended yet to my Father. Go to my brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, my God and your God.’”

Disbelief

Matthew 28:11-15; John 20:18; Matthew 28:8-10; Luke 24:9; Mark 16:10; Luke 24:10; Mark 16:11

11 When they were going, some of those centurions came to the city and told the chief priests of all that was. 12 They gathered with the elders, took counsel, gave quite a bit of money to the centurions, 13 and said to them, “Say, ‘His disciples came and stole him at night while we were sleeping.’ 14 If this was hear by the governor, we will persuade him and you we are taking pains.” 15 They, having taken the money, did as they taught them, and this word spread among the Judeans to this day.

18 Then Mary Magdalene came and evangelized to the disciples she had seen our Lord and what he said to her.

8 The women ran to tell his disciples. 9 Behold, Jesus met them and said to them, “Peace to you.” They neared, held his feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not fear, but go tell my brethren to go to Galilee, and there they shall see me.”

9 They returned from the tomb and told this to the eleven and the rest.

10 She had went evangelizing all those mourning and weeping that were with him.

10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the rest with them who told the apostles. 11 These words appeared in their eyes as madness.

11 They, having heard them say he was alive and had appeared to them, did not believe them.

Road to Emmaus

Luke 24:13-35; Matthew 16:13

13 Now two of them that day were going to the village named Emmaus, sixty stadiums from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about all these things that happened. 15 And while they were talking and inquiring with each other, Jesus came, reached them, and walked with them. 16 But their eyes were shut so they did not recognize him. 17 He said to them, “What are these words you are telling one another walking and depressed?” 18 One of them, named Cleophas, answered and said to him, “Are you maybe by yourself a stranger to Jerusalem, since you do not know what was in it these days?” 19 He said to them, “What?” They said to him, “About Jesus, who was from Nazareth, a man who was a prophet and mighty in word and deeds before God and before all of the people. 20 The chief priests and elders rendered him a death sentence and crucified him. 21 We supposed he was the one who was to save Israel. Behold, it has been three days since all of this has been. 22 But the women among us also amazed us for they were first to the sepluchre, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came to tell us they had seen angels there who said he was alive. 24 Some of us also went to the sepulchre and found it as the women had said but did not see him.”

25 Then Jesus said to them, “Oh, you lacking in discernment and heart-heavy to believe in all the prophets spoke! 26 Was not this meant to be so the Messiah would suffer and enter into his glory?” 27 Explaining all the scriptures about himself to them, he began from Moses and from all the prophets. 28 They were nearing that village where they were going, and he made them suppose as if he was going to a distant place. 29 They pressed him and said to him, “Stay with us because the day has now declined to darkness.” And he entered to abide with them. 30 It was when he reclined with them, he took bread, blessed, broke, and gave it to them. 31 At once their eyes were opened, they knew him, and he was taken from them. 32 They said to each other, “Was not our heart heavy within us, while he was speaking with us on the way and explaining the scriptures to us?” 33 They rose at that hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered and those with them 34 saying, “Truly our Lord is risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 They also recounted what happened on the way and how he was known by them when he broke bread.

13 They did not believe them.

John 20:19; Luke 24:36-48; John 20:21-30

19 When it was evening of that Sunday, and the doors were shut where the disciples were out of fear of the Judeans,

36 While they were speaking, Jesus rose among them and said to them, “Peace be with you. It is I. Do not fear.” 37 But they were alarmed and with fear, for they supposed they were seeing a ghost. 38 Jesus said to them, “Why are you agitated? What thoughts rise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and feet that it is I. Feel me, know a ghost has no flesh and bones as you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 As they were until now unbelieving from their joy and wondering, he said to them, “Do you have something here to eat?” 42 Then they gave him a portion of broiled fish and honeycomb. 43 He took it and ate before their eyes. 44 He said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was with you: it is fitting everything should be fulfilled written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and psalms about me.” 45 Then he opened their mind to understand the scriptures. 46 He said to them, “So it is written and so it is just that the Messiah suffer and rise from among the dead in three days 47 so repentance for the forgiveness of sins might be preached in his name among all the peoples. The beginning shall be from Jerusalem. 48 And you shall be witnesses to this. 49 I will send upon you the promise of my Father.”

21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As my Father sent me, I also send you.” 22 When he said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive someone’s sins, they shall be forgiven. If you hold someone’s, they are held.” 24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called the twin, was not there with them when Jesus came. 25 The disciples said to him, “We saw our Lord.” But he said to them, “If I do not see in his hands the nails’ places, put my fingers in them, and stretch my hand over his side, I will not believe.” 26 After eight days, on Sunday, the disciples were inside and Thomas with them. Jesus came as the doors were shut, rose in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 27 He said to Thomas, “Bring your finger here, see my hands, bring your hand here, stretch it over my side, do not be unfaithful, but faithful.” 28 Thomas replied and said to him, “My Lord and my God.” 29 Jesus said to him, “Now you have seen me, you are faithful. Blessed are they who did not see me and were faithful.” 30 Jesus had done many other signs before his disciples not written in this book. 31 But these are written also so you may believe in Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, and once you are faithful, you may have in his name life forever.

Appearance at Lake Tiberia

John 21:1-13

1 Jesus showed himself again to his disciples at the sea of Tiberias this way. 2 Simon the Rock, Thomas called the Twin, Nathaniel of Cana of Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 Simon the Rock said to them, “I am going to catch fish.” They said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went forth, went up into the boat, and that night caught nothing. 4 When it was morning, Jesus stood on the shore of the sea, and the disciples did not know it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have anything to eat?” They said to him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast your net from the right side of the boat, and you can.” They cast it, and they could not draw the net for the many of fish it caught. 7 That disciple Jesus loved said to Rock, “This is our Lord.” Then Simon, when he heard it was our Lord, took his tunic, girded it around his waist because he was naked, and cast himself into the sea to come to Jesus. 8 But some others of the disciples had come in the boat, for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits and drew that net of fish. 9 When they went up on the land, they saw coals laid, a fish laid on them, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of these fish you have now caught.” 11 Simon the Rock went up and drew the net to the land, full of 153 great fish and with all this weight that net did not rend. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come dine.” None of the disciples dared to ask him who he was, for they knew that it was our Lord. 13 Jesus neared, took bread and fish, and gave it to them. 14 This is the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples when he rose from the dead.

Restauration of Peter

John 21:14-24; Matthew 28:16-17

15 When they had dined, Jesus said to Simon the Rock, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than them?” He said to him, “Yes, my Lord, you know I love you.” He said to him, “Shepherd for me my lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, my Lord, you know I love you.” He said to him, “Shepherd for me my sheep.” 17 He said to him again the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” It saddened Rock he said to him three times, “Do you love me?” He said to him, “My Lord, you know everything; you know I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Shepherd for me my ewes. Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were a child, you would gird your waist for yourself and walk where you willed. Once you have aged, you shall stretch out your hands, and another shall gird your waist and take you where you do not want.” 19 He said that to him to explain by what death he was to glorify God. When he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

20 Simon the Rock turned and saw that disciple whom Jesus loved, the one he which at the supper leaned on Jesus’ chest, following him. He said, “My Lord, who betrays you?” 21 When Rock had seen this one, he said to Jesus, “My Lord, and what of this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I will this man remains until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.” 23 And this word went forth among the brethren that disciple should not die. But Jesus did not say he should not die, rather, “If I will this man remains until I come, what is that to you?” 24 This is the disciple who bore witness to all this and also wrote it, and we know that his witness is true.

16 But the eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain where Jesus appointed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some of them had doubted.

12 He appeared to two of them in another form while they were walking to the village. 13 They went to tell the rest, yet they did not believe them. 14 At last, he appeared to the eleven as they were reclining and upbraided them for their lack of faith and hardness of the hearts, for those who saw him rise did not believe.

Ascension

Acts 1:6-9; Luke 24:51; Acts 1:10-11

6 Then when they gathered, they asked and said to him, “Our Lord, is this the time you will return the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know the time or times which the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you shall receive power and be to me witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea as well as the house of the Samarians to the ends of the earth.” 9 When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud received him, and he was hidden from their eyes.

52 They then worshipped him and went back to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 All the time, they were praising and blessing God in the temple. Amen.

20 Then they went forth and preached in every place. Our Lord would help them and confirm their words by signs they would do.
