Sermon on the Mount
Authorizing of the Disciples
Matthew 5:1; Luke 6:13-17; Mark 3:14-15
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up to the mountain. When he sat down, his disciples drew near to him.
13 When it dawned, he called his disciples and chose from them those twelve whom he called apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Rock, Andrew his brother, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, Jacob son of Alphaeus, Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of Jacob, and Judah Iscariot, the one who was the betrayer. 17 Jesus went down with them and stood in the plain. And there was a great crowd of his disciples, and much of the crowd of people were from all of Judah, Jerusalem, and the shore of Tyre and Sidon.
14 He chose twelve to be with him, to send them to preach, 15 and to have authority to cure the sick and cast out demons.

Beatitudes
Luke 6:20; Matthew 5:2-10; Luke 6:22; Matthew 5:11-12; Luke 6:24-27
20 He raised his eyes on his disciples.
2 He opened his mouth and was teaching them and saying: 3“Blessed are the poor in spirit; theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. 3 Blessed are the sorrowful; they shall be comforted. 4 Blessed are those who are hungering and thirsting for righteousness; they shall be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for mercy shall be on them. 8 Blessed are those who are pure in heart; they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers; they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness; theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
22 “Blessed are you all when men hate you, exclude you, shame you, and put forth your name as evil for the sake of the Son of Man.
11 “Blessed are you when they shame you, persecute you, and speak evil talk about you falsely for my sake. 12 Therefore, rejoice! Exult! Your wage is much in Heaven, for they likewise persecuted prophets before you.
24 “But woe to you, the rich; you received your consolation. 25 Woe to you, the satisfied; you will hunger. Woe to you who now are laughing; you will cry and lament. 26 Woe to you when men talk about you beautifully, for their ancestors likewise did to the false prophets. 27 I say to you who are hearing, cherish your enemies and treat beautifully the ones who hate you.

Salt of the Earth and Light of the World
Matthew 5:13-16; Mark 4:22-23
13 “You are the salt of the earth. If the salt turns bland, with what shall it be salted? It is of no use but to be thrown outside and trampled on by man. 14 You are the light of the world. It is not possible for a city built on a mountain to hide. 15 They do not light a lamp and install it beneath a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it illumines for all those in the home. 16 Therefore, your light will illumine before mankind, so they see your good deeds and praise your Father who is in Heaven.
22 “For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed and nothing lurking unrevealed. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, may he hear.

Fulfillment of the Law
Matthew 5:17-25; Luke 12:58; Matthew 5:25-26
17 “Do not suppose I came to undo the law or the prophets; I came not to undo but to fulfill. 18 For amen I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one yod or one jot shall pass from the law until all shall be. 19 All, therefore, who would undo the least of these commandments and teach mankind to do so shall be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet all who do and teach this shall be called the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. 20 For I say to you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. 21 You heard it said by predecessors, ‘Do not kill,’ and, ‘All who kill have been condemned to judgement.’ 22 I say to you anyone who rages at his brothers in vain is condemned to judgment. Anyone who calls his brothers raqa is condemened by the assembly. Anyone who says, ‘Fool!’ is condemned to the Gehenna of fire. 23 Therefore, if it happens you are offering your offering upon the altar and there you remember your brother holds some grudge against you, 24 leave your offering there before the altar. Go first to be reconciled with your brother, then come offer up your offering. 25 Be allied with your plaintiff quickly.
58 “For once you are going with your plaintiff to the magistrate, while you are on the road, negotiate and free yourself from him, so that he will not bring you to the judge.
25 “The judge shall hand you over to the tax-collector, you shall fall in prison, 26 and amen I say to you, you shall not go out from there until you give the last penny.

Spirit of the Law
Matthew 5:27-32; Luke 16:17-18; Matthew 5:33-42
27 “You heard it said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you, everyone who sees a woman like he desires her at once commits adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye makes you stumble, pluck it and cast it from you. For it is better for your one of your members perishes and your whole body not fall in Gehenna. 30 If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut and cast it from you. For it is to better for you one of your members perishes and your whole body not fall in Gehenna. 31 It was said anyone who dismisses his wife shall give to her a writ of divorcement. 32 I am saying to you all, everyone who loosens his wife except for cause of harlotry makes her commit adultery, and he who takes up a divorced woman does commit adultery.

Love of Enemies
Matthew 5:38-42; Luke 6:30-31; Matthew 5:43-46; Luke 6:32-36; Matthew 5:47-48
38 You heard it said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 I am saying to you, stand against the evil one. But when one strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 When one wants to arbitrate with you and takes your tunic, leave him your coat as well. 41 When one compels you to go one mile, go with him a second. 42 When one asks you, give to him.
30 “Do not demand from one who takes that which is yours. 31 As you want men to do to you, so do to them as well.
43 “You all heard it said, ‘Love your neighbor; hate your enemy.’ 44 But I am saying to you all, ‘Cherish your enemies, bless him that curses you, treat beautifully the one that hates you, and pray for those that lead you violently and persecute you. 45 It is this way you will be sons of your Father in Heaven, who dawns his sun upon the good and evil and who drops his rain upon the righteous and iniquitous. 46 For if you cherish those who cherish you, what compensation do you have? Do not the publicans do this as well?
32 “For if you cherish those who cherish you, what is your grace? For sinners also love those who cherish them. 33 If you do good to those who treat you well, what is your grace? For sinners also do so. 34 If you lend to him who you suppose will pay you back, what is your grace? For also sinners lend to sinners so as to be paid back. 35 But cherish your enemies, do good to them, lend without cutting anyone’s hope, and your compensation will be much. You will be sons of the High One, for he is sweet upon the evil and the thankless. 36 Therefore, be merciful as your Father is merciful.

Sight of God
Matthew 6:1-8
1 “Look at your alms; do not do them before men as to be seen by them without a compensation for you from your Father in Heaven. 2 So when you give alms, do not sound a horn before you like the hypocrites in synagogues and marketplaces so as to be praised by men. Amen I say to you they received their compensation. 3 Then when you give alms, may your left not know the action of your right 4 so that your alms are secret and your Father who sees in secret rewards you openly. 5 Whenever you pray, do not be like hypocrites who love to stand in synagogues and corners of the marketplaces to pray to be seen by men. Amen I say to you that they received their compensation. 6 When you pray, enter your room, shut your door, pray to your secret Father, and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly. 7 Whenever you pray, do not babble like the heathen, for they suppose their many words will be heard. 8 Therefore, do not imitate them, for your Father knows what you was asked by you before you asked him.
1 It was when he was praying in one place that once he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Our Lord, teach us to pray just as John also had taught his disciples.” 2 Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say this:
1 It was when he was praying in one place that once he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Our Lord, teach us to pray just as John also had taught his disciples.” 2 Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say this:
9 “Our Father in Heaven, your name will be hallowed. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will will be on earth just as it is in Heaven. 11 Give us the bread of our need today. 12 Forgive our debts just as we too forgave our debtors. 13 Do not bring us to the trial but free us from the evil one because the kingdom, power, and glory are yours forever. 14 For if you all forgive men of their faults, your Father in Heaven will forgive you. 15 Yet if you do not forgive men, neither is your Father going to forgive your faults. 16 When you all fast, do not be gloomy like the hypocrites, for they corrupt their faces so that they appear to men like they were fasting. And amen I say to you all, they received their compensation. 17 But when you are fasting, wash your face and salve your head.

Therefore, if your eye is simple, your whole body is bright also. 23 If your eye is evil, your whole body shall be dark. If, therefore, the light within you is dark, how much your darkness shall be.

24 “No one can serve two masters, for he either shall hate one and love the other or shall honor one and deprecate the other. You all cannot serve God and mammon. 25 For this I say to you all, do not worry yourselves about what to eat, what to drink, or what to wear upon your bodies. Is breath not more than provisions and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the heaven’s birds, which do not sow or reap or store in barns. Your Father in Heaven feeds them. Are you not more than they? 27 Who among you by worrying can add one cubit to his height?
26 “If then you all cannot for a small thing, why do you worry about the rest?
28 “Why do you worry about clothes? Observe the lilies of the field, how they are great by neither toiling nor spinning. 29 I say to you all, not even Solomon in all his glory had been so enrobed as one of them. 30 If then the grass of today’s field is so and tomorrow falls in the oven, how much more does God enrobe you all of little faith. 31 So do not worry or say, ‘What will we eat, what will we drink, or how will we be enrobed?’ 32 For the gentiles seek all of these, yet your Father in Heaven knows you request these things. 33 Seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness, and all these will be added to you. 34 Therefore, do not worry for tomorrow; tomorrow worries for its own. Its evil suffices for the day.

37 “Do not condemn, and you are not condemned. Release and you will be released. 38 Give and you are given. In good, firm, and abundant measure, they will cast into your laps. For in that measure you measure, it is measured to you.”
24 He said to them, “See to what you are hearing. In that measure that you measure, it is measured to you all and added to you who are hearing. 25 For it shall be given to him who has and be taken from him who has not.”

39 He had told them a parable, “Can the blind guide the blind? Do they not both fall in a chasm? 40 There is no disciple better than his master; each one who is perfect shall be as his master. 41 For why then do you see stubble in your brother’s eye? The log in your eye is not seen by you. 42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out stubble from your eye.’ Look, the log within your own eye is not seen by you, hypocrite. Take out first the log from your eye, then you will see to taking stubble from your brother’s eye.

Requesting the Holy Spirit
Luke 11:5-13
5 He said to them, “Who among you with a friend would go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘My friend, lend me three loaves 6 because a friend has come to me from the road and I have nothing to set for him.’ 7 Would that friend of his from within reply and say to him, ‘Do not harrass me. Look, the door is shut and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give it to you.’ 8 I say to you all, if he will not give it to him out of kindness, he will rise and give to him as much as is demanded of him out of obstinancy. 9 I am also saying to you all, ask and you will receive, seek and you shall find, knock and you will be received. 10 For all that ask receive; that seek, find; that knock, are received. 11 What father among you whose son asks him for bread would hand him a stone? If he should ask him for a fish, would he hand him a snake? 12 If he should ask him for an egg, would he hand him a scorpion? 13 If you all who are evil know to give good gifts to your children, how much more would your Father from Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

Good Fruits
Matthew 7:12-16; Luke 6:44; Matthew 7:17-18; Luke 6:45; Matthew 7:19-23; Luke 6:47-48; Matthew 7:25-39
12 “All that you wish men do to you so also do to them, for this is the law and the prophets. 13 Enter through the narrow door; the door is wide and way is broad which brings destruction. Many go by means of it. 14 How strait the door and narrow the way that brings to life, and few are those that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets that come to you in sheep’s clothes, but within they are ravenous wolves. 16 But by their fruits you shall know them. Do they pluck grapes from thorns or figs from thistles?
44 “For every tree is known by its fruits. They do not glean figs from thorns nor pluck grapes from a bush.
17 “So every good tree makes fine fruits; the evil one makes evil fruits. 18 The good tree cannot make the evil fruits, nor can the evil tree make the good fruits.
45 “The good man from good treasures in his heart brings forth good things; the evil man from evil treasures in his heart brings forth the evil things. For from the excesses of his heart the lips speak.
19 “Each tree that does not make good fruits is cut and thrown in fire. 20 Thus, from its fruits you shall know them. 21 Not all that say to me, ‘My Lord, my Lord!’ come into the Kingdom of Heaven, but whoever does the will of my Father in Heaven. 22 Many shall say to me on that day, ‘My Lord, My Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many portents?’ 23 Then I will make it known to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you workers of iniquity.’
47 “Everyone who follows me, hears my words, and does them, I will show you all what he is like. 48 He is like a man who built a house, dug, deepened, and set the foundations on a rock. When there was a deluge, the deluge beat on that house and it could not shake it, for its foundation was set on the rock.
25 “The rain fell, rivers came, winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, for its foundations were set on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will look like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rains fell, rivers came, winds blew and beat on that house, and it fell; its fall was great.” 28 It was when Jesus finished these words that they were amazed at his teaching. 29 For he had taught them as an authority, not as their scribes and the Pharisees.
