Children of Jacob

Birth of Jacob’s Elder Sons
Genesis 25:21-27

1 Rachel saw she did not bear child by Jacob, envied her sister; and said to Jacob, “Give me children. If not, I die!” 2 Jacob’s rage flared at Rachel, and he said to her, “Am I in God’s stead, who withheld from you the fruits of the womb?” 3 She said to him, “Here is my maid Bilhah. Come in on her, and she will bear child upon my knees and I will also be consoled by her.” 4 Then she gave him her maid Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob came in upon her. 5 Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. 6 Then Rachel said, “God has judged me. He even heard my voice and gave me a son.” For this she named him Dan. 7 Rachel’s maid Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob another son. 8 Then Rachel said, “I beseeched the Lord, supplicated with my sister, and also found him.” She named him Naphtali. 9 Leah saw she ceased bearing children, took her maid Zilpah, and gave her to Jacob as a wife. 10 Then Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 And Leah said, “My luck came!” and named him Gad. 12 Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “With my praise that the girls praised me.” And she named him Asher.

Jacob's Younger Children
Genesis 30:14-24

14 Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Give me some of your son’s mandrakes.” 15 Leah said to her, “It is not enough for you to take my husband but you also want my son’s mandrakes?” Rachel said, “For this he will lie with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.” 16 Jacob entered from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him and said, “You are going to come in to me because I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” He lay with her that night. 17 God heard Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Leah said, “God game me my hire I gave my maid to my husband.” And she named him Issachar. 19 Leah conceived again and bore a sixth son to Jacob. 20 Then Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good dowry. This time my husband will cleave to me because I have borne him six sons.” And she named him Zebulun. 21 Afterwards she bore a daughter and named her Dinah. 22 Then God remembered Rachel, and God heard her and opened her womb. 23 She conceived, bore a son, and said, “God has taken away my shame.” 24 She named him Joseph and said, “May the Lord add to me another son!”

Laban's Payment
Genesis 30:27-35

27 Laban said to him, “If I found mercy in your eyes, I take it the Lord blessed me because of you.” 28 He said, “Set apart your wage by me, and I will give it.” 29 Jacob said to him, “You do know the labor I labored for you and that your property is with me 30 because you had little before me, and it multiplied well. The Lord blessed you because of me. Now what shall I do also for my household?” 31 Laban said to him, “What shall I give you?” Jacob said to him, “Do not give me anything. If you do this deed I tell you, I will return to shepherd with you and keep watch: 32 I will pass through all your flock today and separate for myself from there every bald and spotted sheep. Then every black lamb among the white and the spotted and bald among the goats shall be my wage. 33 My innocence will testify for me today as tomorrow when you enter upon my wage before me. Every one not bald and spotted among the goats and black among the white is stolen by me.” 34 Laban said to him, “Yes. It will be according to your word.” 35 Then he set apart that day the bald and striped male goats, all the bald and striped female goats, every one with white on it, and every black among the white, and gave them into the hand of his sons.

Jacob’s Enrichment
Genesis 30:37-42

37 Jacob took fresh white rods of almond and plane and peeled white streaks in them, showing the white of the rods. 38 He nailed in the rods he peeled in the water courses in the trough. When the flock came to drink before the flock, they went into heat once they were coming to drink. The flock went into heat on account of the rods. 39 The flock gave birth to bald and speckled lambs. 40 Jacob set the lambs apart. He placed the bald and speckled lambs in front of the flock and all the black in Laban’s flock. He made a sheepfold for himself alone and did not mix them with Laban’s flock. 41 Each year the first-born flock went into heat, Jacob would place the rods in front of the flock in the course so they would go into heat by the rods. 42 He would not set them with the late-born of the flock; the late-born were Laban’s and the first-born Jacob’s. 43 The man grew very very rich, and had many flocks, servants, handmaids, jennies, camels, and donkeys.

Jacob’s Flight from Laban
Genesis 31:17-22

17 Jacob rose, took his children and his wives on camels, 18 and drove all of his livestock, each acquisition he acquired in Paddan-aram, to come to his father Isaac’s in the land of Canaan. 19 As Laban had gone to shear his flock, Rachel stole her father’s idols, 20 and Jacob stole Laban the Aramean’s heart because he did not tell him he was going. 21 He fled with all he had, rose, crossed the river, set his face to Mount Gilead. 22 On the third day, Laban was told Jacob had fled.

ܿLaban’s Confrontation with Jacob
Genesis 31:25-35

25 Laban overtook Jacob, and Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountain, and Laban and his brothers camped in the mountain of Gilead. 26 Laban said to Jacob, “What did you do to me? You stole my heart and took my daughters like a captive of the sword. 27 Why did you hide to flee, steal from me, and not tell me? Then I sent you away with joy, song, harps, and tambourines. 28 Why did you not let me kiss my sons and my daughters? Now you acted foolishly in this thing you did. 29 It came into my hand to do you evil, but the God of your father had said to me in the evening, ‘Beware lest you speak to Jacob anything from good to evil.’ 30 Now you indeed went because you indeed longed for the house of your father. Why did you steal my gods?” 31 Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid, and you said you might take your daughters from me. 32 The one with whom your gods are found shall not live. In the presence of our brothers, make known what is yours of what I have and take it.” Jacob did not know that Rachel stole them. 33 Laban entered Jacob’s tent, Leah’s tent, and the tent of the two maids, and did not find them. He went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Rachel had taken the idols and put them in the camel’s saddle, and sat on them. Laban frisked throughout the tent, but did not find them. 35 Rachel said to her father, “May it not be bad in the eyes of my lord because I cannot stand before you because I have the way of women.” He searched and did not find the idols.

Reconciliation between Jacob and Laban
Genesis 31:48-55

48 Laban said, “This heap is bears witness between you and me today.” Therefore, he called it Galeed 49 and the Lookout, for he said, “The Lord will see between you and me because we are parting from each other. 50 If you abuse my daughters, if you take wives besides my daughters, no one is with us, see God bears witness between you and me.” 51 Laban said to Jacob, “Look at this heap and this pillar I set between you and me. 52 This heap bears witness and the pillar bears witness I will not pass this heap over you, and you shall not pass this heap and this pillar over me for evil. 53 May the God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, judge between us.” It is the God of their fathers. Jacob swore by the religion of his father Isaac, 54 and Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and called his brothers to eat bread. They ate bread and stayed the night on the mountain. 55 Laban rose up early, kissed his sons and daughters, and blessed them. Laban returned and went to his region.

ܿReconciliation between Jacob and Esau
Genesis 33:1-4

1 Jacob raised up his eyes and saw here was Esau coming with four hundred men. Then he divided the youths over Leah, Rachel, and the two maids. 2 He crossed the maids and their sons in front, Leah with her sons, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 He had crossed ahead of them and bowed on the ground seven times until he neared his brother. 4 Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, fell upon his neck, and kissed him. Then they wept.

ܿJacob at Penuel
Genesis 32:24-32

24 Jacob stayed alone, and a man fought with him until the morning rose. 25 He saw his strength was not prevailing and touched his hip, and Jacob’s hip dislocated as he fought with him. 26 He said to him, “Send me away, for the morning rose.” He said, “I will not send you away unless you bless me.” 27 He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” 28 He said to him, “No longer will you be called Jacob, but Israel, for you were affirmed with an angel and a man, and your strength prevailed.” 29 Jacob asked him and said, “Tell me your name.” He said to him, “Why are you asking my name?” Then he blessed him there. 30 Jacob named the region Penuel, “For I saw an angel face to face, and my soul was delivered.” 31 Then the sun lowered as he passed Penuel, and he was disabling his thigh. 32 For this the children of Israel do not eat the sinew tendon on the thigh to this day because he attacked Jacob’s thigh sinew.

ܿRape of Dinah
Genesis 34:1-7

1 Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the region. 2 Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the chief of the land, saw her, took her, lay with her, and abused her. 3 His soul went out after Dinah, the daughter of Jacob. He loved the girl and spoke to the girl’s heart. 4 And Shechem said to Hamor his father, “Get me this girl as my wife.” 5 Then Jacob heard Shechem defiled his daughter Dinah, and his sons were with the livestock in the field. Jacob was silent until they came. 6 Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him, 7 and the sons of Jacob came from the field. When they heard, it saddened the men and displeased them well because they had done defilement in Israel and abused the daughter of Jacob. This is not done.

ܿCircumcision of the Hivites
Genesis 34:13-17

13 The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor and told them deceitfully since they defiled their sister Dinah. 14 They said to them, “We cannot do this matter, giving our sister to a man without circumcision, because that is a disgrace to us. 15 However, we will be persuaded by you if you would become like us, and every male be circumcised like we are circumcised. 16 Then we will give our daughters to you, take your daughters for us, dwell with you, and be one people. 17 If you will not hear us and be circumcised, we will take our daughter and go.”

Revenge on the Hivites
Genesis 34:24-31

24 All going out the village gate heard about Shechem and his father Hamor, and every male, all going out the village gate, was circumcised. 25 It was the third day when their pains strengthened, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword, entered upon the village in the still, and killed all the males. 26 They had killed both Hamor and his son Shechem by the sword’s edge, took their sister Dinah from Shechem’s house, and left. 27 The sons of Jacob had entered upon the slain and looted the village because they defiled their sister Dinah. 28 They had taken their flock, bulls, and donkeys in the village. 29 They had captured all their money, all their baggage, and their wives they captured and looted all that was in the village. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You all harmed me: you did me wrong among the land’s inhabitants, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites. I am few in number. Them gathering upon me and striking me, I and my house are going to be destroyed.” 31 They said, “Shall our sister be done like a prostitute?”

Death of Rachel
Genesis 35:16-20

16 He took up from Bethel and travelled but about a parsang of land to enter Ephrath, and Rachel gave birth and labored strongly. 17 It was when she labored strongly, the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid, because you will have another son.” 18 It was as her soul was leaving and she was dying, she named him Son of My Pains, but his father called him Benjamin. 19 Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath, that is, Bethlehem, 20 and Jacob set up a pillar upon Rachel’s grave. It is the pillar of Rachel’s tomb to this day. 21 When Israel had took up and pitched his tent from there beyond the tower of Godar. 22 It was when Israel settled in that land, Ruben went and lay upon Bilah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard.

God’s Promise
Psalm 105:1-15

1 Thank Lord, call his name, and tell his works among the peoples. 2 Praise him, sing to him, and narrate all his wonders. 3 Praise his holiness’ name, and the hearts of those who seek the Lord will rejoice. 4 Seek the Lord and be strengthened. Seek his face at all times. 5 Remember the wonders he did: his wonders and the judgement of his mouth. 6 Offspring of his servant Abraham and sons of Jacob are his chosen ones. 7 He is the Lord our God, whose judgements are in all the earth. 8 He remembers his covenant forever; the word he commanded for a thousand generations, 9 the covenant he established with Abraham, his oaths with Isaac, 10 his witness with Jacob, the covenant to Israel forever. 11 He said, “To you I will give the land of Canaan, the lines of your inheritance.” 12 When you were few in number, little, and residents in it, 13 he walked from people to people, from one kingdom to another people. 14 He did not let man oppress them. He chewed out kings on their account 15 and said, “Do not approach my anointed and do my prophets no evil.”
